We are encouraged and excited by the emerging use case of NFTs (or Non-Fungible Tokens) in art, collectibles, and other unique digital properties. Smart contract capable blockchains creating these digital assets with ownership identifiability, authenticity, royalties, and more are groundbreaking for artists and collectors alike.
Inspired by some interesting and philosophical Web3/NFT discussions happening in the space, we created our first NFTs as tribute and introduction: gm 2021 and gm-2 2021. Steel welds as the letters ‘gm’ on steel plates; one cursive, one printed, documented in photographs. ‘gm’ is an acronym for ‘good morning’ but more specifically embodied the new ethos of sorts within the NFT space.
Cursive format gm 2021 and printed format gm-2 2021 physical counterparts were fabricated on the same day in Houston, TX. One will be destroyed, and one will be distributed to an original owner. They explore relationships of IRL artworks with NFT counterparts.
A few days after creating/minting gm 2021 we destroyed the original physical piece so that it would only exist digitally on the blockchain. Proof of that destruction in form of a time lapsed video NFT was also minted. The physical piece of gm-2 2021 however would have a different fate as a deliverable to the original collector accessed/verified as unlockable content within the NFT. Both unique; one destroyed, one delivered. This experiment attempts to explore the relationship of NFTs and the physical world, does one hold more value or merely preference?
NFT platforms like OpenSea.io will allow us to explore and participate in this categorically new asset typology while leveraging our own processes and approach to art and design.
